Divorce and alienation cannot be underestimated

The Kennebec Journal's May 30 letter from a soon-to-be teenager regarding teen suicide was very insightful. All kids face problems throughout their growing-up years. The family is where they look for comfort and love and guidance that helps them grow.

When children go through divorce, it puts a terrible burden on them. Add parental alienation and you have a disaster waiting to happen.

We must listen to kids like Garrett Van Alstyne, who address a problem. Kids In Distress works to prevent kids who are victims of parental alienation, are afraid to say what they feel and are afraid to show love for the parent who's being denigrated by the other.

www.Divorcemag.com  states 1,075,000 kids are in divorce and that fatherless homes account for 63 percent of youth suicides, 50 percent of teenage moms, 85 percent of those in prison, 90 percent of homeless/runaways, 71 percent of high school dropouts and 85 percent of behavior problems. This is underestimated, as many more kids live in homes where their parents aren't married and a break-up occurs. Ninety percent children of divorce live with the mother.

Studies are underway in Maine now addressing problems of divorce/separation. The Guardian ad Litem (GAL) study is chaired by Judge Lawrence and the parental conflict (parental alienation) study is chaired by Justice Horton.

Family courts have failed. GALs without proper training or understanding make disastrous decisions affecting the family's future. GALs are not accountable for their actions.
